Dolores crossed the room, her aubergine skirt catching the light of a fading sun. She still remembered the first time they’d come back to this room, to have coffee in the late afternoon.

“Graham, I want to talk.”

He put the coffee cup down, after struggling for a few minutes because of his stubby arms. Graham knew what she was talking about, knew what she was going to say. He sighed and his head delicately burst through the ceiling.

People had always called their relationship improbable — two puzzle pieces that never fit together, two paths that were never meant to cross. And yet when she touched his scales with the back of her hand, he never wanted to eat her whole. He just wanted to be with her. But now wasn’t the time to reminisce, it was the time to get over her, to let the sunlight fade into the darkness of a long night.

“ROAOAOOROOOROOAOOROOOROOROOROOOROOAOOORRROOROAOROOOROROROROROOROOROAROOORORORRRROOOOOROROOROAOROROOROOROROOROAORORRRR,” Graham whispered.
